My favorite bird is a penguin. For a local bird, it would be a blue jay (even though they're mean!)

I'm a big fan of the local birds of prey around my area. My favorites are the Osprey and Northen Harrier.

My local favorites vary from the charismatic (Acorn Woodpecker, Yellow-billed Magpie) to the funky (Varied Thrush) to uncommon but interesting species I've had good luck with (Rock Wren, Phainopepla). There are probably only about 5 counties with that combination, so it gives away were I live!

Snowy Owl, hands down.
So Emu, you live in central California I guess? I don't know the counties though...

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area, across the hills east of Oakland in particular. To get that combination of birds and reliably have Varied Thrush in winter, I figure you'd have to be in the inland coast range from about San Benito County (south of San Jose) north to Solano County at the north end of the Bay Area.
I've gone to Vancouver BC to see Snowy Owls in winter (as many as 14 or so in one spot) and found one at the Duluth airport on a business trip, but alas they are not a local bird for me...
