Snowy Owl (207) (Nyctea scandiaca) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1127) (Comments - 2718)
Canada (Ontario) Presqu'ile Provincial Park - I thought I'd give you a rare glimpse into the world of the Snowy Owl. If you look closely you'll see that this bird is in the process of coughing up a pellet which consists of undigested fur, bones and in this specific case, a few small feathers (duck may have been on the menu). It took it about a minute before the pellet was expelled. This shot was about 5 seconds before it was out. The gray mass is about 2" long and nearly an inch wide. By examining owl pellets you can gauge what its recent meals have been.

Canada (Ontario) Wolfe Island (Kingston) - Notice the difference in appearance with the other bird I posted. I love the stern look. This bird was perched on a large bale close to the road offering a close but brief photo op.

Canada (Ontario) Presqu'ile Provincial Park - The face of this bird is unusual. It is almost clown-like. It coughed up a large pellet shortly after this photo was taken. Duck was on the menu.

Canada (Ontario) St. Rose - one of the first I have photographed for the season although birds have been in the east for weeks. A number of new birds have arrived since the weekend.

Canada (Qu├ębec) First snow of the winter season set in today, and with it came my first Snowy Owl photo of the season. A note related to this photo - whether a good or bad idea, the Montreal Airport authority has a fauna control officer who I saw while taking this photo setting a large trap. The plan is to capture the owl and I believe to relocate it farther away from the airport. My thought - the Snowy Owl is rather stationary and insignificant compared to other hazards that airplanes face such as large flocks of Canada Geese, etc.
