Canada (Québec) I found this Snowy Owl sleeping at night near runway 24R at the Montreal Airport in Dorval. My first attempt at a long exposure of this species; photo taken at 8:30pm under a cloudy sky. The backside of the bird is only slightly lit by the hangar lights.

Canada (Ontario) Ingleside - It begins again. This is my first Snowy of the winter, not one of the few individuals that summered in Ontario. No idea if it will stick around or is heading further south. Others to follow soon we hope.

Canada (Ontario) The 2013/14 winter has seen a huge invasion of Snowy Owls... too bad that the only one I could capture on a photo was looking the other way!! But what a great bird!

Canada (Québec) Gatineau - Looking back over this amazing winter for Snowy Owls, I never thought I'd come up with a picture like this. A returning bird has probably been around for a couple of weeks and who knows when it will decide to depart. Seeing this species in such a setting is totally unexpected. This completes my run for 225 birds.

Canada (Ontario) Kingston - Moments before sunset, this juvenile female presented herself for a photo op. The season is almost done; the numbers are dwindling rapidly. Our wintering birds have left and those that were in the U.S. and stopped over briefly are moving on.

Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - I thought I was done with Snowy Owl pictures but the birds decided otherwise. Only in migration can you find individuals willing to tolerate each other's presence. The sight of a 'flock' of Snowies is not what most expect to see. There were six birds present in a very tight area, two or three usually together most of the time. At one point four birds within 15 feet of each other.

Canada (Ontario) Lancaster - This may look like just another Snowy Owl but for me it is special. This is #175. I would never have believed that milestone could be achieved in one season but it was reached and surpassed today by several more. I have never seen this many in my life before, much less seeing them in one winter.

Canada (Québec) Seen at Mirabel, Quebec just as a snowstorm was beginning (the white blur in the eye is a snowflake).

Canada (Ontario) Cobourg - This is a winter like no other. A while ago I set a goal of hopefully seeing 100 Snowies this winter. I surpassed that target some time ago and have spotted 150 in Eastern Ontario alone with a few in other parts of the province like this bird. It would be possible to see 175 In Eastern Ontario but it would take some work and a lot more driving. There will be many fond memories. I anticipated that we would start to see birds returning from the U.S. around mid-month. Last night in Cornwall I found an old adult male, no visible marks, atop a light (so I could clearly see it with binoculars even at 10 p.m.) This is a new bird locally. Keep your eyes open for more arrivals.
