Snowy Owl (187) (Nyctea scandiaca) User: Brian  (See all photos - 934) (Comments - 1942)
Canada (Ontario) St. Rose - I was photographing this bird on a pole for about five minutes when it took off hunting. It flew close overhead and I couldn't even get it all in but that was OK. The light was perfect.

Canada (Ontario) Kingston - Wolfe Island. Finally had a chance to shoot a great looking male. This was a banner day. We made a concerted effort to do a Snowy count and ended up with 47 birds. Without knowing key places to look and how to look (have to stay until after sunset) you'd come away with about 20-25 birds which is still great.

Canada (Ontario) St. Rose - Went back to a favourite regional location today and was surprised to see a good number of Snowies. Most were still on the ground at a distance but a couple were closer to the road.

Canada (Ontario) Kingston - Wolfe Island This bird called (a shriek) about a dozen times over a five minute period. It was not calling to me but possibly to a bird in the distance. Most of the time it was facing away as it called. It was the most I have heard any Snowy Owl call.

Great Blue Heron (169) (Ardea herodias) User: Chris  (See all photos - 1284) (Comments - 3647)
Canada (British Columbia) At the very end of the day, a few rays of sunlight came in on this one, at West Vancouver. He doesn't want the Snowy Owl to overtake his spot as the top photographed bird. Currently tally is 168 to 166 in favour of the Heron :)

Canada (Ontario) St. Rose - back to check on our regional Snowies on a snowy day. For a change this bird was perched at eye level on a sign rather than atop a power pole.

Snowy Owl (187) (Nyctea scandiaca) User: Brian  (See all photos - 934) (Comments - 1942)
Canada (Ontario) St. Rose - there was just enough sunlight to highlight the bird's beautiful eyes. As usual, the bird was on a pole, annoyingly oblivious to me in my van. She did occasionally look, just long enough to get the shots I was after. She didn't care about small vehicles but she took off when a noisy larger truck passed by.

Canada (Ontario) Kingston - I came across yet another gorgeous bird today. The sombre sky provided nice even tones for the owl. WIth no snow they show up better than during the depths of winter. I love the talons.

Canada (Ontario) Presqu'ile Provincial Park - I thought I'd give you a rare glimpse into the world of the Snowy Owl. If you look closely you'll see that this bird is in the process of coughing up a pellet which consists of undigested fur, bones and in this specific case, a few small feathers (duck may have been on the menu). It took it about a minute before the pellet was expelled. This shot was about 5 seconds before it was out. The gray mass is about 2" long and nearly an inch wide. By examining owl pellets you can gauge what its recent meals have been.

Canada (Ontario) Wolfe Island (Kingston) - Notice the difference in appearance with the other bird I posted. I love the stern look. This bird was perched on a large bale close to the road offering a close but brief photo op.

Canada (Ontario) Presqu'ile Provincial Park - The face of this bird is unusual. It is almost clown-like. It coughed up a large pellet shortly after this photo was taken. Duck was on the menu.

Canada (Ontario) St. Rose - one of the first I have photographed for the season although birds have been in the east for weeks. A number of new birds have arrived since the weekend.
