Snowy Owl (207) (Nyctea scandiaca) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1127) (Comments - 2718)
Canada St. Rose - I call this one white on white. The day had very poor sky conditions but can it ever really be a bad day to take a Snowy picture? At least it wasn't on a pole.

Canada (Ontario) St. Isidore - apparently this bird is a regular at this roadside stop. On this day I could see one of its associates atop another Petro Canada sign at the same station.

Canada (Ontario) St. Rose - In my ongoing hunt for variety in Snowy Owl shots I came across this very dark juvenile female atop a fencepost. I rarely see birds at that level and the fact that she was cooperative enabled me to approach reasonably close without flushing. I used the car as a blind.

Canada (Ontario) St. Isidore - I thought I'd include a novelty shot. First time I've had a good look at a Snowy Owl's tongue.

Canada (Ontario) St. Isidore - I got lucky. About one bird in 40 is an older adult male. I waited for 75 minutes for this bird to do something besides sit atop an ugly power pole with its eyes closed. It began hunting and moved to a better perch, with its eyes open.

Snowy Owl (207) (Nyctea scandiaca) User: Chris  (See all photos - 1462) (Comments - 4422)
Canada (Québec) In a nature scene I've not witnessed, this Snowy Owl suddenly went into a defensive posture. At the same time, one of the observers standing next to me yelled out "Gyrfalcon!". One had been reported in the Mirabel area harassing Snowy Owls last week. It turned out to be a Peregrine Falcon in the end, but an interesting encounter nonetheless.

Canada (Québec) Just prior to the snow starting, the clouds went slightly darker blue. It helped with the background of this Snowy Owl sitting in a tree on the north side of Mirabel Airport. The third of 5 owls seen today.

Canada (Ontario) St. Rose - I am now concentrating on types of Snowy Owl shots that I don't have yet. I have seen about 55 different birds this winter and this ranks at the top of the list as the 'cleanest' adult male. Likely only about 2-3% of this year's migrants look like this.
