Canada (Ontario) St. Rose - I am continuing with my Snowy theme introducing what I think is likely a first year bird. This is my first young male this winter. While males are overall smaller in size, that can be deceptive without direct comparison. Males have a smaller head though and for my eye the head shape and face often look cat-like.

Mallard (102) (Anas platyrhynchos) User: Brian  (See all photos - 934) (Comments - 1943)
Canada (Ontario) Cornwall - Yes, you read that right. This is a female bird with male characteristics, notably part of the head, breast and tail. Its wonky genes have produced an interesting new look. Apparently this bird has been seen in recent winters here.

Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - I am not a fan of 'pole' birds but I make an exception when the right individual or circumstances comes along. This fine looking male made the cut :) It was my first male this winter.

Canada (Ontario) Amherst Island - There have been a few birds recently but we had 11 today. That's a high number for this species. The owl is looking directly at me, responding to the camera shutter firing.
