Boreal Chickadee (3) (Parus hudsonicus) User: Brian  (See all photos - 934) (Comments - 1943)
Canada (Ontario) Algonquin Park - a very challenging species to both find and photograph. They are nothing like our familiar Black-caps. They are very secretive and are more often heard than seen. They are not fond of seeds but enjoy peanuts and suet.

Great Grey Owl (43) (Strix nebulosa) User: Brian  (See all photos - 934) (Comments - 1943)
Canada (Ontario) Williamsburg - this individual has a very dark facial disk. The dark disk, dark around the eyes and overall darker brown plumage suggests the bird is partially melanistic. I rechecked other images and have reconsidered the bird's sex. It may have been a male after all.

Great Grey Owl (43) (Strix nebulosa) User: Brian  (See all photos - 934) (Comments - 1943)
Canada (Québec) Plaisance - This bird attracted attention because of the unusual amount of brown feathers around the eye. None of us has ever seen one like this before. I made the trip specifically to see it and we had some luck. I have friends who have many years experience with Great Greys and have handled both live birds and study skins. They had never come across this marking.

Ross's Gull (2) (Rhodostethia rosea) User: Brian  (See all photos - 934) (Comments - 1943)
United States (New York) Tupper Lake - A rare bird in North America and a very rare breeder. COSEWIC designates the Ross's Gull as threatened. There are about 50,000 birds worldwide mainly in Siberia but between 0 and 10 pairs breeding annually in northern Canada. There is a slight pinkish blush below, present in both sexes. Viewing conditions were poor and the bird was not as close as I'd like but we got it which was the main thing. This bird is currently in the Adirondacks on a nearly frozen river. That is possibly the most illogical place one would expect to find it. This bird should be between Russia and Alaska in the Pacific.

American Tree Sparrow (15) (Spizella arborea) User: Brian  (See all photos - 934) (Comments - 1943)
Canada (Ontario) Chateauguay - Île Saint-Bernard. With virtually no winter finches to see, birds such as the Tree Sparrow offer some relief for weary observers.
