Alder Flycatcher (6) (Empidonax alnorum) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1092) (Comments - 2601)
Canada (Ontario) Long Sault - Also identified by call. This bird was 50 yards from the Willow but true to its name the Willow was in a nice stand of willows along a creek. But even that is not a reliable way to confirm what you are looking at.

Willow Flycatcher (12) (Empidonax traillii) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1092) (Comments - 2601)
Canada (Ontario) Long Sault - Identified by call. Now it is not safe to 'make a call' on these birds because they are too close to the Alder in plumage and most are no longer calling.

Cape May Warbler (26) (Dendroica tigrina) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1092) (Comments - 2601)
Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - This was surprisingly one of the most common warblers that day, next to Yellows and Yelow-rumps. One tree had a dozen or more. These and other northern warblers have been around since the end of July and in better than expected numbers. We have been theorizing that there may have been an early departure thanks to forest fires in some areas.

Northern Parula (29) (Parula americana) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1092) (Comments - 2601)
Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - We are into the challenging identification period with a host of confusing fall warblers to deal with. This is obviously a Parula and I think a first year bird.

Cedar Waxwing (72) (Bombycilla cedrorum) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1092) (Comments - 2601)
Canada (Ontario) Algonquin Park - I went all the way to Algonquin to get a picture of a waxwing :) Well the bird did look pretty nice. At this time of year you seldom see any of the local specialty birds like Canada Jays and Black-backed Woodpeckers.

Olive-sided Flycatcher (4) (Contopus cooperi)
Near-threatened
User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1092) (Comments - 2601)
Canada (Ontario) Algonquin Park - How do I know it was a male? Because it was singing us a nice song. "Quick three beers". It was very high up in a dead tree so quite a crop unfortunately. If you've noticed I'm on a flycatcher roll. No chance of an Acadian but maybe I'll still get lucky somehere with a Yellow-bellied.

Sandhill Crane (52) (Grus canadensis) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1092) (Comments - 2601)
Canada (Ontario) Whitney - Just outside Algonquin Park. Putting on a nice display. The nice earthtone colour is actually earth. The birds preen with mud and where it is iron-rich it is redder. There is lots of sandy-muddy soil in the area. In the late fall there is less of this activity and the birds' flat gray plumage is revealed. I like this look.
