Sandhill Crane (55) (Grus canadensis) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1209) (Comments - 3114)

Sandhill Crane (55) (Grus canadensis) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1209) (Comments - 3114)
Canada (Ontario) South Lancaster - These birds left the adjacent Cooper Marsh and headed into the nearby field. The young can fly short distances and look for food but won't pass up any morsels the adults present to them. The adult is pretty wet and rather muddy obviously from slogging around in the marsh.

Veery (13) (Catharus fuscescens) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1209) (Comments - 3114)
Canada (Ontario) Avonmore - Another car window shot. Even though the day was hot and it was almost noon, shooting in the shade made it possible to get some decent photos.

Savannah Sparrow (34) (Passerculus sandwichensis) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1209) (Comments - 3114)
Canada (Ontario) Amherst Island - Continuing the common summer birds theme, this is a species that will often allow you to pull up in your vehicle and get reasonably good shots. Not all birds 'look good'. We had to try several individuals before we found one we liked. It is also important to select the right background. We sized up options before driving closer because once we stopped, subsequent movement would probably send the bird off.

Common Yellowthroat (54) (Geothlypis trichas) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1209) (Comments - 3114)
United States (New York) Massena - Interesting subjects are becoming more challenging to find at this time of the year so common birds move to the forefront.

Grasshopper Sparrow (7) (Ammodramus savannarum) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1209) (Comments - 3114)
Canada (Ontario) Burnt Lands Provincial Park - I had the opportunity to revisit this area and got a few more shots of Grasshopper Sparrows very early in the morning. This species has unusual dabs of colour. It has a touch of ketchup on the lores and a splash of mustard on the leading edge of the wing.:)

Grasshopper Sparrow (7) (Ammodramus savannarum) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1209) (Comments - 3114)
Canada (Ontario) Burnt Lands Provincial Park - This has become a difficult species to find, even in areas of suitable habitat. In this case a few pairs can be found breeding on a semi-open alvar with six other species of sparrows.

Palm Warbler (35) (Dendroica palmarum) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1209) (Comments - 3114)
Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - This is the eastern subspecies, which has a breeding range that doesn't get much further west than Ottawa. The bird has much more yellow than the western subspecies and is sometimes called the 'yellow' Palm.

Cedar Waxwing (73) (Bombycilla cedrorum) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1209) (Comments - 3114)
Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - Another relatively easy to find summer species but when one lands a few feet away you just have to take the shot. There is almost no vertical crop on this image.

Upland Sandpiper (17) (Bartramia longicauda) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1209) (Comments - 3114)
Canada (Ontario) Amherst Island - The best time to find these uncommon birds is early and late in the day. The call is unique.
