Ottawa- This was a bizarre scene. The Raven stood right beside the owl but did not attack it. It called a few times, walked circles around it and would stand right in front of it, inches away from the Snowy's face. The Raven eventually flew off. The owl didn't give up any ground. The Raven is spotted in snow making it look like it is snowing.

2021 has certainly started well. With few opportunities to get out, we have been very lucky. This instance at Burrard Inlet Vancouver required some waiting for rays of light in between the trees in behind. Not sure if it a camera effect but the unedited colouring is seen here and appeared more greenish/turquoise than I remember for this species.

Near Whitby - This is the second record for Canada. The first was a bird in Toronto in late fall 1993. They are very rare in North America, with only six U.S. records of this South American species. It saved me a trip south :)

We have 4 species of Sandgrouse in Southern Africa. They prefer the drier parts in the west. These Burchalls we found in the Kgalagadi. They drink early morning just after sunrise

Most of these owls migrate but a few stick around through the winter. They are usually difficult to find, spending the day tucked close to the trunk of a dense evergreen where branches make a clean shot all but impossible. After finding the bird I quickly took a few photos then left it alone.

It was very very weird looking for a Blue Jay today. Even weirder to hear and see him...brought back memories of the east. Ladner, BC. Note - crest blown back due to the wind.

Was in Kruger last month. I had never seen the courtship display and mating of red-billed Oxpeckers. Here is the female in submissive mode
