Evening Grosbeak (12) (Hesperiphona vespertina) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1142) (Comments - 2742)
Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - I spent a couple of hours on a cold winter morning trying to get shots of a flock near a feeder on a public trail. Numerous branches obscured the birds most of the time but patience delivered in the end.

American Tree Sparrow (18) (Spizella arborea) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1142) (Comments - 2742)
Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - Last month I posted a picture of a Tree Sparrow but I couldn't confirm until now that the number of winter visitors this year are way down from what we can expect. With Christmas bird counts almost complete for another year, results are showing low to record low numbers across Ontario. I'm not sure why that is. It doesn't suggest that there is anything disastrous happening with the species but it is a curiosity. We'll see this time next year if the numbers return to normal.

Tennessee Warbler (10) (Vermivora peregrina) User: Sue  (See all photos - 3274) (Comments - 2806)
Canada (Ontario) I find this bird hard to photograph in Canada. It was much easier in it's wintering grounds in Panama where it was very common. Taken at Long Point Provincial Park

Mandarin Duck (4) (Aix galericulata) User: Chris  (See all photos - 1476) (Comments - 4444)
Canada (British Columbia) captive / domesticated The origin of this bird is unknown, however I'm going to assume it's an escape or release and place the Domesticated tag on this photo. He was following a female Wood Duck for the entire time I watched him. He even made CBC News headlines in Vancouver. Either way hundreds of people were lined up to see him put on one of nature's most impressive displays.
