Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1258)
Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - What's wrong with this picture? Those are two of four Hooded Merganser ducklings with some of the Wood Duck's 9 ducklings of her own. The odd thing is mother duck had all 13 with her and no sign of Hoodie, at least not right there. We thought of a couple of possibilities. She was playing babysitter while Hoodie went on her own for a swim or she was the mother of the four oddballs but did't lay the eggs. Both birds laid eggs in the same tree nest and the Wood Duck ended up brooding. Interesting regardless.

Is that ever strange...I wonder if the mother realizes and whether she will continue the babysitting. Great find.

Strange is right. Good question. The bigger question is if she is the surrogate mother how are fish eaters going to deal with a plant eating menu. Let's hope Mother Nature takes over and has them going in the right direction, learning to dive on their own.

Great capture,Brian.
I guess it is a common thing for Wood Ducks to raise Hooded Mergansers.I once saw a TV program called Woodies and Hoodies about the same subject.
