Strange is right. Good question. The bigger question is if she is the surrogate mother how are fish eaters going to deal with a plant eating menu. Let's hope Mother Nature takes over and has them going in the right direction, learning to dive on their own.

I guess it is a common thing for Wood Ducks to raise Hooded Mergansers.I once saw a TV program called Woodies and Hoodies about the same subject.
