Funny you say that...I’ve seen them taking what looks to be while oysters or mussels and swallowing, but it’s hard to tell whether they spit them out.

I don't think so. Eiders crush shells in their gizzard then excrete what is left so scoters may do the same.

I see you've discovered the White Rock pier. It's a great place for close-ups of Scoters and other diving birds.
