I was able to shoot from the car without disturbing it. It successfully caught a vole at one point.

Aside from being an owl, which puts it on a birding pedestal, it is a fun bird to watch in the daytime. Now for the sad conclusion to the story. On Sunday afternoon as I was on my way to see it for a second time, I got word that it had impacted a car and was killed instantly, shortly before I would have arrived. We actually expected this because it was hunting along a 4-lane highway and that is a common end to Northern Hawk Owls in this type of setting. The bird was picked up by a birder and I hope will at least end up as a study skin in a museum.
