Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1291)
Canada (Ontario) Being attacked by a Northern Shrike. The owl is competition, not its next meal. I had the camera on a tripod and was watching the shrike, waiting to see if it would attack. I started shooting a couple of seconds before it reached the owl, otherwise a shot like this would be very difficult to get.

While I set up to potentially capture an attack I didn't know if I'd have any luck. It is a fraction of a second for a shot like this and you have no way of knowing if it will work. Most of several shots in the burst failed but this one was successful.

A very rare shot indeed. Not something that is possible for most people to obtain.

It was a gamble but it paid off.
